Language / Region URLs

💡 hreflang Best Practices

  • hreflang tags must appear on every language version of the page — not just one. If page A references page B, page B must also reference page A.
  • x-default is the fallback page shown when no language matches the user's preference — typically the English or language-selector page.
  • You can use language-only (ko, en) or language + region (ko-KR, en-US) codes. Use region codes when targeting different variants of the same language (e.g., en-US vs en-GB).
  • Each page must include itself in its own hreflang set (self-referencing hreflang).
  • Check hreflang errors in Google Search Console under International Targeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I don't use hreflang on a multilingual site?
Google may treat your language versions as duplicate content, or show the wrong language page to users in different countries. For example, a Japanese user might see your English page instead of your Japanese version.
Can I implement hreflang in the sitemap instead of the <head>?
Yes. Both methods are valid and Google recommends using one or the other (not both). The sitemap approach is easier to maintain for large sites. Use the "Sitemap XML" tab to get the code for this method.
Do I need to include a self-referencing hreflang?
Yes, each page should include a link to itself in the hreflang set. For example, if you're on the English page, include hreflang="en" pointing to the current page's URL along with all other language variants.
How long does hreflang take to take effect in Google?
Google needs to crawl all language versions of your pages before hreflang becomes fully effective. This can take weeks. Check Google Search Console's International Targeting report for errors and to monitor progress.
